Charles Butt Scholarship Finalist Information

Congratulations on advancing to the next round of the Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers!

The final step in the selection process is to record and submit an asynchronous interview via Hireflix. The link to complete your asynchronous interview should have come from “Charles Butt Scholarship via Hireflix“. Please do not share this link with anyone as it is specific to you.

Information about scholarship eligibility, the asynchronous interview, and how to prepare is provided below. I strongly encourage you to read all of the information BEFORE you start your interview. If you have any questions, please email RaisingTXTeachers@CharlesButtFdn.org.

Scholarship Eligibility

  • Please remember, this scholarship opportunity is specifically for students who plan to become Texas public school teachers in either Title I schools or priority subject areas (math, science, bilingual, or special education). You will be asked about your commitment to either Title I schools or one of the priority subject areas.
  • Applicants should either be currently enrolled or planning to enroll in one of the eligible programs listed here.
  • You must have at least the fall 2026 semester and the spring 2027 semester left before you graduate. If you only have one semester left, you are not eligible for this scholarship.

Please email RaisingTXTeachers@CharlesButtFdn.org if you have questions.

Asynchronous Interview via Hireflix

An asynchronous interview lets you virtually record short video responses to a set of questions on your own time, rather than meeting live with an interviewer. This format gives you flexibility while allowing the selection committee to get to know you beyond your written application. You can record your asynchronous interview at any time convenient for you, but you must record before the deadline in your email. The Charles Butt Scholarship is using a platform called Hireflix to collect your recorded asynchronous interviews.

Asynchronous Interview Logistics:

  • The interview can take anywhere from 20 – 40 minutes. Find a place where you can focus for the entirety of your interview.
  • You will have two minutes of preparation time for each question. Use this time to prepare your response. You are welcome to have a pen and paper handy.
  • You’ll have up to 4 minutes to respond. You don’t have to use the full 4 minutes for your response; prioritize a thoughtful, genuine answer over speaking for the full duration. Avoid rambling or repetition.
  • You may re-record your response once per question. However, you cannot view your first recording or choose between recordings. If you decide to re-record, your original response will be deleted and only the second recording can be submitted. Please use this option only if necessary.
  • You will need an internet connection and a device with a camera. If access to these is a concern, please let us know as soon as possible. We recommend using the Chrome browser on any laptop or smartphone. If you are using an iPhone, please use Safari. It is also not recommended to use a university internet connection if you can avoid it. Sometimes university firewalls block Hireflix.
  • Please ensure all responses are your own. Submitting AI-generated content may jeopardize your eligibility.

How to Prepare:

  • The purpose of this interview is to provide information about yourself and your commitment to becoming a Texas public school teacher. Reflect on why teaching is the career for you.
  • Reflect on why you want to teach in one of the focus areas (either Title I or priority subject areas (math, science, bilingual, special education).
  • Review the Charles Butt Scholar Knowledge, Skills, and Values below. Think about how you have demonstrated the Charles Butt Scholar Knowledge, Skills, and Values in your life.
  • Use the START method to develop and flesh out responses. Information below taken from the Harvard Business Review.
    • The START acronym stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result, and Takeways.
      • Situation describes the circumstance or challenge you faced (one to two sentences).
      • Task explains the objective you were responsible for achieving (one sentence).
      • Action details the hard and soft skills you used to accomplish the task and resolve the situation (three to five sentences).
      • Result is the outcome and impact your actions had on the situation (one to two sentences).
      • Takeaways include what you learned from the experience.

Practice Interview:

I strongly recommend you record a practice interview before you record the real thing. You can only submit one practice interview, so please make sure you’re in a quiet place before you begin.
