Alumni Stories: Connected Community

The Charles Butt Foundation fosters ongoing learning communities for current participants and alumni of our statewide programs. Our Alumni Stories series showcases short accounts from participants on the meaningful connections, mutual support, and collaborative learning they’ve gained through this network.

“I was thinking about quitting school because I wasn’t able to afford it anymore,” says Guadalupe Moreno.

At just the right time, Moreno received an email from Sam Houston State University College of Education encouraging her to apply for the Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers

“This scholarship really helped me continue my education and get to where I am today. I am forever grateful and happy to be part of this organization that is helping future teachers be more successful inside of the classroom.”

Moreno is now a bilingual 3rd-grade math and science teacher at Lee Elementary in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD.

“Same for me,” Monica Pérez says. “I was not going to be able to enroll again in another semester due to the financial problems that I was going through at the time.”

It was Moreno who first told Pérez about the scholarship and encouraged her to apply. The two are friends and champions of each other. At Moreno’s encouragement, Perez applied for and received the scholarship. This enabled her to take four classes last semester. She just completed her senior year at Sam Houston State University.

“I feel a lot of pride in being chosen to represent the Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers,” Pérez says. “Because they don’t just help us I know they are going to be able to help other future teachers as well.”

In addition to financial support, the Charles Butt Scholarship network creates opportunities for new and aspiring educators to support one another along their professional journeys. It’s this ongoing support and community that Guadalupe and Pérez say sets the scholarship apart from other programs.
