Disclaimer: This initiative initially was launched and coordinated by the Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation, which in 2022 merged with and became the Charles Butt Foundation.

Ten Charles Butt Scholar alumni, now first and second-year teachers, share their struggles, victories, and learnings a few months into the 2020-21 school year. These new Texas teachers find inspiration in their profession, and in the process, inspire us. Explore the full Q&A portfolio.

Q What does your teaching life look like right now, and how are you handling it?

A My teaching life is a bit stressful because I have virtual and face to face students. I believe I’m handling it as best as I can.

Q What should Texans know about what is happening currently in public schools?

A Texans should know that districts are doing the best that they can to follow safety protocols to keep our students and staff safe.

Q How has your education prepared you for this moment?

A I believe that my education touched base on what I would see in the classroom, but it wasn’t until my clinical teaching that I actually learned what I was getting myself into. No book could’ve mentally or emotionally prepared me to be in my own classroom, but I know I had the proper education, support, and determination to pull through.

Q What is one way you have recently tried to address the unique needs of learners?

A I communicate with parents and let them know what’s going on and ask them, “what is something that I can do to engage your child?” I usually get a list or some fun facts to help me connect with them better. I make videos of myself for them with detail about what we’re doing in class and what is expected of them.

Q Given the good, bad, and ugly of 2020-21, what do you love about teaching right now?

A I love the effort I see in my students.
