Alumni Stories: Feeling Supported Every Step of the Way

The Charles Butt Foundation fosters ongoing learning communities for current participants and alumni of our statewide programs. Our Alumni Stories series showcases short accounts from participants on the meaningful connections, mutual support, and collaborative learning they’ve gained through this network.

Melinna Chessher is a Scholar Alumna of the Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers. She is a recent graduate of the Texas Tech University TechTeach Across Texas program. Through this program, Chessher received rigorous, field-based teaching experience that will set her up for a strong start to her teaching career.

When asked what has been most meaningful about being part of the Charles Butt Scholarship network, Chessher responded: “Having a mentor.”

As part of the support each scholarship recipient receives, Scholars have access to a pool of mentors who are also a part of this network as alumni of the Raising School Leader program. We encourage Scholars to build their professional network with experienced guides who can support them on their journey to the classroom.

“I really enjoy engaging in conversation with an individual that understands my journey, sees my potential, and encourages me to do my best and succeed,” Chessher says.

“My mentor has helped me in a variety of ways to boost my confidence as a teacher, and as an individual. The techniques and skills I have developed have proven to be useful and effective in the classroom and in my personal life. My mentor has helped me improve my skill set and has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone throughout my educational journey. I have received great feedback throughout these past few semesters from her that I have been able to implement, as well. Above all, my mentor has helped me develop leadership skills and has supported me every step of the way, and for this, I am truly grateful.”

The Charles Butt Scholar mentorship program gives scholarship recipients the opportunity to grow their professional network and make lasting connections in the field.
