Applications open for 2023 Raising School Leaders Program

At the Charles Butt Foundation, we believe every Texas school requires a strong leader at helm who is equipped to support teachers, develop future leaders, create systems of change to ensure better outcomes for all students, and advocate for their school, community, and public education as a whole.

At the heart of our pursuit of this vision is our Raising School Leaders program. The primary strategy for Raising School Leaders, the Foundation’s first statewide program, consists of a week-long leadership development institute conducted through The Principals’ Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and yearlong participation in a community of practice focused on campus improvement and individual leadership development.

The application for the 2023 Raising School Leaders cohort is open through March 15, 2023.

Campus leadership teams serving Texas public schools are eligible to attend the School Turnaround Leaders institute. Principals serving Texas public schools are eligible to attend the Achieving Excellence: Leadership Development for Principals institute. Each institute is a week-long professional development summer course taught in Cambridge, Massachusetts by faculty at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

This year, the Raising School Leaders Harvard program is particularly focused on sending rural school leaders as part of the program. As demographics shift in Texas, we recognize the needs of rural schools are unique. Our hope is to create a space for rural school leaders to find commonalities, problem solve, and build a network of support that can inform, challenge, and advance their work back on their campuses.

Since 2008, the Charles Butt Foundation has sponsored more than 1,500 principals across the state to attend training at Harvard. Expenses covered for attendees include tuition, travel, hotel, and other discretionary costs.

Yet, our investment in, and support of, these school leaders continues well beyond their attendance of the institutes. All participants become part of an alumni network and receive professional development and connection through our Leadership Symposium.
