The Southern Methodist University Teacher Preparation Program supports both undergraduate and graduate students. Because we believe that teachers best learn to teach through work in schools and classrooms, participants in the SMU Teacher Preparation Program work in local public schools as part of their coursework and training throughout every semester of the program. Participants begin fieldwork at the beginning of their program by being paired with an experienced teacher, and they continue fieldwork throughout their course of study. Our graduate students engage in a fast-paced course of study. Following summer courses and fieldwork, students complete student teaching while taking training coursework. Student teaching occurs three days a week for the fall and spring semesters. The M.Ed. with Teacher Preparation Program is intense, practice-focused and community-based. After one summer and one academic year, our graduate students are positioned to earn a Master of Education degree and recommendation for Texas teacher certification.
Participation in a year-long residency program and a commitment to pursuing a teaching career in Texas is required.
