If you have a question about the Charles Butt Scholarship, please be sure you have read over the About the Scholarship page first. This page has important information about which universities and programs are eligible for this scholarship.
Trinity University and the Department of Education are proud and honored to participate in the Charles Butt Scholars program for future teachers. In addition to a scholarship, the program provides mentorship, professional development, networking, career support, program support, and connections with scholars across the state of Texas.
Please note, as per the Charles Butt Scholars program: “The Charles Butt Scholarship is exclusively for students committed to a teaching career in the Texas public school system in either a Title I school or in a shortage subject area (math, science, bilingual, or special education).” The Charles Butt Scholars program will make the decisions regarding scholar selection. We encourage applicants to look into the knowledge, skills, and values that are important to the Charles Butt Scholars program and its scholars. We will help the program make its scholar decisions by reviewing applications and providing student recommendations.
All prospective Master of Arts in Teaching applicants are encouraged to apply for this prestigious scholarship and program experience if they are (1) interested in teaching in a public school in Texas after the MAT and also (2) committed to teaching in a high-need school (Title I, majority disadvantaged) and/or shortage subject area. We will help our candidates to determine a high-need school that would be a strong, positive setting for their first year of teaching as they are making employment decisions during the MAT program. The scholarship for the MAT program is $10,000 over the three semesters of the program (summer, fall, and spring). Please see specific scholarship and program requirements, including that the Charles Butt Scholars program requires a GPA of 3.0 or higher and has citizenship/eligibility to work requirements.
Rising juniors and seniors who are on track for the Master of Arts in Teaching program at Trinity University can apply for the Charles Butt Scholars program as well. The scholarship for undergraduates is $8,000 per year for each year that the candidate is in good standing. This means that students could qualify for the scholarship for up to three years (junior year, senior year, MAT year) if committed to teaching and remaining in good standing. Because students should be committed to teaching and our MAT program (or another Charles Butt scholars program in Texas), we encourage students to wait to apply until they are sure about their commitment to teaching and the MAT program to apply. This is especially important in order to be on track for the scholarship and program benefits for the MAT year ($10,000). We recommend that students should be completing prerequisite courses for the MAT program (at least 6 hours for rising juniors and 8 hours for rising seniors are recommended) and, if possible, be on track for the Minor in Education if that fits into their schedule. Please see specific scholarship and program requirements, including that the Charles Butt Scholars program requires a GPA of 3.0 or higher and has citizenship/eligibility to work requirements.
